Excellent – reads like a first chapter, a great introduction to a bigger piece. There’s bits of Neverwhere and Hellboy’s Goblin Market here and it’s a great scene, sympathetic character. This needs to be expanded on.
John Wiswell says
I’ll agree with DJ that it reads like the first chapter of something. Feels like a great deal of setup, including for a world. Will this have any connection to the novel you’ve just announced?
Helen says
I agree with the two above, it does feel like the set up to a bigger piece.

Icy, I love, love, love this! It reminds me a lot of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. The voice is superb, the imagery outstanding, the pace perfect….one of your best.
Tony Noland says
Poor girl. All that trouble and she’s still gone hungry.
Rich, deep environment, Icy.
Beverly Fox says
I echo everyone else in saying that this reads like a perfect first chapter to a book I would live to read. It’s an incredibly rich world you’ve built her, ripe with magic, political intrigue, and a fascinating race the reader can’t help but want to know more about. I hope you’ll write this story.
Larry Kollar says
This was a great piece. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Vyolet in the novella! (Like Tony, I’m bummed that she didn’t get her chow.)

Lol the last line was funny. I agree with everyone who said this feels like the opening scene of a larger piece

So this is a preview of your book? Nice intro to the character, and I agree about the market’s name!
Poor woman, still hungry!

This is a great opening and a cool world you’ve established. Looking forward to more.

It does read like a first chapter. Vyolet is the character you’re writing a longer piece about, right? She’s interesting — like a cross between someone from Neverwhere and a Morlock.
Icy Sedgwick says
Vyolet will pop up in the sequel to The Necromancer’s Apprentice. I’ve had her kicking around as an idea for a while but I wanted to introduce people to the Underground City a little more!
